If DISTRO_VERSION is defined to some undefined variable, e.g.,
DISTRO_VERSION = "${FOO_VERSION}", and /bin/sh is dash, then
do_install() would fail with an error such as:
run.do_install.2945:193: run.do_install.2945: Syntax error:
Unterminated quoted string
This was due to unexpanded Python code making it into the shell code,
confusing the shell parser.

Move /etc/hosts to base-files, and also add entry to it according
to hostname setting. This fixes the problem of commands like
`hostname -f' failing due to lack of such entry.

The kernel mounts /proc and /sys with the mode 555. Fedora explicitly
sets this value in its filesystem setup package. Debian doesn't seem
to set it explictly. Having them be 755 causes permission issues on
upgrades inside a container where the guest does not have the
permission to change the modes of the mount points.
So, just bite the bullet and force them to be 555.

The current handling of resize is incorrect. Using `resize > /dev/null
2>&1 && resize > /dev/null' will cause the second resize command to not
execute because 'resize > /dev/null 2>&1' will fail for resize utility
from busybox.
What we really should do is just to check whether ${bindir}/resize
is executable and execute it if so. Using '-x' is sufficient.

Respect VOLATILE_LOG_DIR variable. In this way, if the user overrides
this variable to be any valid boolean false value, /var/log on the final
image would reside on persistent storage.

This is causing a problem in multilib where base-files and lib64/32-base-files
clash because they may have different dates. Also, if the package is coming
from sstate it has an incorrect date anyway.

getVar() now defaults to expanding by default, thus remove the True
option from getVar() calls with a regex search and replace.

Having skel in the staging area lets other recipes access these files.
For ex. recipes inheriting useradd, if passing "-m" to USERADD_PARAM,
.bashrc and .profile are put automatically in $HOME, as expected.

Commit ea647cd9eebdc3e3121b84074519c4bb305adac9 moved the locations
of /run and /var/lock to match the FHS 3 draft specifications.
However, the install doesn't remove the existing directories.
As a result, upgrading a system may result in /run as a softlink
to /var/run and /var/run as a softlink to /run, creating a circular
link.
During pre-install, check for the existence of the old softlinks and
remove them so the new directories can be installed.

Use CONFFILES to mark editable files as such,
/etc/motd
/etc/nsswitch.conf
/etc/profile
If there is no %config micro before the file name in the spec file,
this file will be overwritten after updating package.
This will make our settings lost.

By default, COLUMNS is set to 80. If possible, run 'resize' to
determine what the current dimensions are. This avoids the final
part of long lines overlap the start of the same line.

In commit b0df35f47fb79dc149504bd66d1186b3276f9510
("base-files: Add to make some directories needed by LSB.") there
were new groupings of dirs made. But rather than keep the grouping
names permissions based as they clearly were, it seems that it was
unfortunately misinterpreted as a counter, simply incrementing as
a new group was added.
This leads to dir3755 getting chmod'd to 0755 and dir4775 being
chmod'd to 2775 which to any new reader of the code is terribly
confusing.
Choose names that clearly reflect the permissions, and add a lsb
suffix to indicate the role.
Also note that the settings for /var/mail seem incorrect, and so
they have been aligned with what is seen in most common distros.

and found that it originally was via debian import, and then
it morphed over time:

If we run "bitbake -S base-files" today, and re-run it tomorrow with
nothing changed, we would see that the do_install.sigdata changes
because of:
do_intall -> do_install_basefilesissue -> DISTRO_VERSION -> DATE
We had set:
IMAGE_NAME[vardepsexclude] += "DATETIME"
in meta/conf/bitbake.conf, we can set a similar line in
base-files_3.0.14.bb to fix the problem.

When we change the ROOT_HOME the sed regex does not match if we are running
the do_install() a second time, so sed the installed file and preserve the original
so that the sed regex is matched correctly in the original
[YOCTO #5765]

It's more reasonable and secure to keep /etc/shells a minimal file, and
then entries for valid shells be added dynamically to the system, only if
the packages that provide them are supported.

A few directories under /media were created by default, /media/card,
/media/ram, /media/realroot, etc.
These directories actually have no real usage now, thus removing them.
The /media/ram entry in the fstab is also removed, as mounting a tmpfs
over /media/ram in our system brings no benefit.
Note that a duplicate '/mnt' entry in dirs755 are also removed.

This adds the /run directory from the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard 3.0
Draft [1] and refactors the filesystem as follows:
- Remove creation of /var/volatile/run
- Remove creation of /var/volatile/lock
- Remove symbolic link from /var/run to /var/volatile/run
- Remove symbolic link from /var/lock to /var/volatile/lock
- Add symbolic link from /var/run to /run
- Add symbolic link from /var/lock -> /run/lock
- Add /run to /etc/fstab for sysvinit compatibility

For hybrid systemd/sysvinit builds, only one fstab can be used.
The default fstab used by sysvinit should work fine with systemd.
Since virtually every machine will ship its own fstab in its bsp
layer, the bsp layer may decide how to override the fstab based
on distro features.

Dash's 'echo' command expands '\n' by default, so the '\n' is not
included in the '/etc/issue' file.

Having the cache in tmpfs implies cache regeneration after every reboot.
For an embedded device this might not be very efficient. So, it is
better for the cache to be persistent between reboots.

oe-core removed the prerequisite to have sh as bash. POSIX doesn't define
any options and furthermore allows 'echo -e' to be the default behavior.
This means that in dash 'echo -e' will actually print '-e' and interpret
backslashes by default. We use instead 'printf' builtin command with or
without '\n' to simulate 'echo -e' or 'echo -n'.
'printf' needs format while 'echo' can be used without any arguments. So
'echo >' was replaced by 'printf "" >'.
'echo' without '-n' flag adds a new line by default so to keep the same
behavior of two new lines while using 'echo "\n"', 'printf "\n\n"' is
used.

The existence of a /etc/hostname file causes any hostname provided on
the kernel command line or via dhcp to be overwritten by the
initscripts 'init.d/hostname.sh'. This change allows you to set a
value of "" for 'hostname' which will skip the creation of the
/etc/hostname file by the base-files package.

This changes the order that file system [types] are tried
when using 'mount' in busybox when the file system type is
not explictly specified. The pervious ordering is
incorrect in that less capable file system types are tried
first, e.g. ext2 before ext3, which will cause an ext3 file
system to be mounted as ext2, disabling some of the ext3
features such as journaling.
The change also moves infrequently used file system types to
the end as checking for them is just a waste of effort in
most cases. The list now also includes ext4.

This is a quick audit of only the most obviously wrong licenses
found within OECore. These fixes fall into four areas:
- LICENSE field had incorrect format so that the parser choked
- LICENSE field has a license with no version
- LICENSE field was actually incorrect
- LICENSE field has an imaginary license that didn't exist
This fixes most of the LICENSE warnings thrown, along with my prior
commit adding additional licenses to common-licenses and additional
SPDXLICENSEMAP entries.
HOWEVER..... there is much to be done on the license front.

That said, I would suggest another license audit as I've found
enough inconsistencies. A good suggestion is when in doubt, look at
how openSuse or Gentoo or Debian license the package.

As discussed on the mailing list, this variable isn't useful and if wanted
would be better implemented by distros using pn-X overrides.
This patch executes:
find . -regex ".*\.\(bb\|inc\)$" | xargs sed -i '/^PRIORITY = ".*"$/d'
against the tree removing the referenced. Thanks to Phil Blundell for
the command.

which could generate undesired behavior.
One example is found in LTP cron_deny01 test, which always complains
"sh: cron_deny01 not found"
cron_deny01 is a shell script which setups the initial test preparation
and then invokes itself for real test under a different user:
su $TEST_USER1 -c "$0"
'su' doesn't inherit PATH into the sub-shell, and thus $0 has to
be an absolute path to have right script found.
ltp appends the path of cron_deny01 to $PATH before running the test:
export PATH="${PATH}:${LTPROOT}/testcases/bin"
In ideal way "${LTPROOT}/testcases/bin/cron_deny01" is found and becomes
$0, which works well.
However due to the ending colon in original PATH:
PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin::${LTPROOT}/testcases/bin
$0 becomes 'cron_deny01' w/o leading path which makes sub-shell under 'su'
failed to locate cron_deny01.
remove ending colon then fixes this problem.

LSB will check some directories,eg, "/usr/local/" and need to make them for LSB test.
